In Norman Maclean's book, A River Runs Through It, Paul describes thinking as a process that begins with observing things, continues when we see distinctions, and concludes when the contrasts we see reveal to us things we cannot see. That has been the role of photography in my life and career: a way of exploring differences and, as Hilman Curtis put it, "Making the Invisible Visible".

My approach, I suppose, has more to do with telling other people's stories than my own artistic expression. Professionally, I earned my livelihood as a photographer and writer by focusing on what makes my clients different from their competition. In the 80s I produced multi-image presentations for corporations like Digital, Owens-Illinois, Ross Labs, Nestle, Blue Cross/Shield, Denison University, and Ernst & Young. Starting in 1986, I began to add video to my production repertoire, and most of my visual creative work for the last 20 years has been done with video and motion picture cameras.

For most of the last decade I have focused on "storytelling", and recently I changed the name of my company and my blog to reflect that focus. Institutions like colleges, humanitarian agencies, and corporations each have a distinct story, and telling it authentically involves nuance and sophistication. The technology with which these stories are told is much less important than the character and values of the people involved. My choice of an ancient cave inscription as my logo is meant to illustrate this principle.

Among the technologies now used to "write on the cave wall", still photography has been my first love. With the convergence of the media since digital cameras and Web 2.0 arrived, my professional storytelling opportunities have finally allowed me to return to that old flame once again. Only now the technology allows me to make stills into motion pictures, and motion picture frames into high-quality stills.

Most exciting for me as an artist, is the opportunity to add weddings, graduation photos, and high end photographic illustration opportunities to my professional pursuits. Thinking along with feeling, personality along with character, nature juxtaposed with the trappings of technology ... all these things are now accessible as extensions of my fingers, eyes, and imagination.

I hope you like the examples contained in these galleries. Hopefully you will see that I love people, and enjoy capturing expressions and communicating the character of each wonder-full person.

My attraction to nature inspires me to look for "found moments" that reveal the understated beauty of creation.

My interest in texture draws me to cityscapes and the people who interact with them.

I have also always been fascinated by the interplay of motion with static forms... you'll see that theme in many photos across all the galleries.

My most recent work is taking me into the realm of High Dynamic Range images and Panoramic images.

The unifying theme for all of my work is just what my company name implies: Ztories (Stories). Finding what is interesting, compelling, inspiring, or motivating in each person's story -- and then telling it with authentic visual and musical artistry. Thank you for visiting my site!
